Your Milky Way Horoscope Nov 1-7, 2009

By Milky Way Maid

Venus trines Neptune on Monday evening, and Neptune goes direct on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 1:10 pm at 23 degrees 42 minutes Aquarius. One source says that Neptune retrograde brings exposure of shams and scams, or the desire to “unveil mysteries.” The retrograde gives an awareness of the subconscious but not necessarily the ability to tune into it.
I seem to notice that the retrograde in a birth chart shows people who are not so comfortable with the ordinary white lies of everyday life, or are people who are easily deceived and misled. Neptune direct though, is quite comfortable with lying to others to gain an advantage. So anyway, this may be a dry period for revelations of scandals hitting the headlines. Where is Neptune in your birth chart? And where is Aquarius in your birth chart? Take your cues from that.

BTW on Thursday, the Moon translates light from an aspect with a malefic planet (a trine to Neptune in the afternoon) into an aspect with a benefic planet (a trine to dear Venus late in the evening). Now, my opinion is that you can try to 'channel' the best of Neptune here by focusing on an ideal, on artwork and beauty, or even on beautiful dance. Then Venus can work on manifesting that thought-form into your reality.
Venus in Libra is inconjunct Uranus in Pisces Monday morning. This can be a tough aspect because one wants to have romance and freedom at the same time. Love may win out but not till after a separation or tiff. This tension can help produce some interesting and even avant-garde artwork.
Venus enters Scorpio at 7:23 pm Saturday, when she puts on the little black dress and her best pearls, a spritz of exotic perfume, and an allure that none can match. Venus here can cast a spell with just her eyes. Venus stays here for the month of November.
Venus in Scorpio natally is not supposed to be a good placement, but that all depends on how mature a soul one is. Younger or more insecure Scorpios may try to control their mates or loved ones. Mature Scorpio Venuses are just totally committed to their relationships. Venus here also has the talent of bringing out latent talents in others.
Readers can follow not only their Sun sign horoscope but also the sign of their Ascendant for further clues to how your week will develop. Also note: some aspects are exact on a weekend but may find opportunity for expression on the Friday or Monday nearest the exact aspect. Times given are in Eastern Standard or Eastern Daylight Savings Time depending on the season.

ARIES - March 20-April 19 – The Moon is in Aries for a few hours Sunday morning. The Moon opposes Venus and sextiles Neptune, which sounds lovely for watching the sun come up with your beloved. Take along some coffee, sweet rolls and blanket. Be careful what kind of things you blurt out Sunday evening, though, when Mercury squares Mars. Things you say to your children or your romantic partner may not be very kind at all. I know you don't understand the nuances of casual conversation, so just agree with your loved ones for the time being.

TAURUS - April 20-May 20 – The Moon is in Taurus from 7:45 pm Sunday till late Tuesday. The Moon is inconjunct Saturn and then trine Pluto on Sunday night; you are frustrated by obstacles etc. imposed by others and make a determination to be more in control of your destiny. The Moon squares Mars in Leo Monday morn which is not a good time to try to bull your way along. Leo is just as stubborn, so yield when making your a.m. commute, OK? The Full Moon is at 2:14 pm Monday at 10 degrees 30 minutes Taurus. The Moon is exalted in Taurus anyway, so this may be a rather auspicious time to start something that you want to last; however, be careful how you use that Mars energy. Tuesday morn has these squares to Jupiter and Neptune so while it is good to dream big, one needs to ground that dream in realistic facts as you try to figure out how to make it happen.

GEMINI - May 21-June 20 – The Moon is in Gemini from 11:53 pm till early Friday. The Moon trines Saturn, exalted in Libra, right away Wednesday night; check your deadlines and be sure to deliver. Saturn in your solar fifth house is a rather odd place for a house of creativity and fun, but you know how to get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice, and Saturn is those untold hours of practice. On Wednesday you are going to have to exhibit your skills of adaptation all day. Thursday has trines to Jupiter and Neptune sandwiching a square to Uranus; ask yourself what you were doing Oct. 6-7 for clues to what this day will be like. The day ends with a trine to Venus; hugs and kisses for being sweet.

CANCER - June 21-July 22 – Mars in your solar twelfth house squares Mercury on Sunday; you may shoot yourself in the foot with displays of temper so watch yourself. The Moon is in Cancer from 2:42 am Friday till the following Sunday. Ugh, the Moon squares Saturn right away Friday morning; at least it will help you check things off your to-do list. Friday night favors making social contacts with people who can give you leg up. Saturday kicks off with a trine to the Sun, for fun, kids, games and creativity. A trine to Uranus in late afternoon sounds great for humor and laughs, also for fixing mechanical things.

LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 – Mercury in Scorpio squares Mars in your sign on Sunday. This can bring arguments in the home, or at best thoughtless remarks, so be very sure of what you want to say. Try to avoid painting yourself into a corner where you have to defend your position. Venus enters your solar fourth house, helping to beautify your home with striking and classic design. You may want a black and white tiled floor, with striking, bold color accents. Your social life revolves around home and family all month. You also try to help family members to build a foundation for their lives.

VIRGO - Aug. 23-Sept. 22 – Venus in Libra, your solar second house, trine Neptune on Monday; this is very nice for spending on art or music but Neptune can bring losses. Be alert to where you place your wallet or purse or purchases. Venus enters your solar third house, giving you a softer touch in your communications. Neighbors and siblings may express their fondness for you, and this could include some gifts or favors.

LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 22 – On Sunday night a Mercury square Mars aspect affects your second house of money (and other possessions). So if you don't want something to become an object of contention between you, just say no to requests to borrow whatever. Also Venus trines Neptune on Monday, and while this may be very good for the arts it is bad for losing cash or jewelry; be alert. Venus enters your solar second house which is a very pretty place for it. You use money to reinforce your self worth, which is perfectly OK to do. You also organize your living and work spaces for comfort and beauty.

SCORPIO - Oct. 23-Nov. 21 – Mercury squares Mars on Sunday evening, affecting your first and tenth houses. You may run around in a lot of wasted effort, or overwork yourself. Mercury in Scorpio can be very cutting, too, so think before shooting off your mouth. A Sun-Mercury conjunction in Scorpio on Thursday heightens your powers of analysis. Venus enters your own sign on Saturday. You feel more comfortable expressing affection with those close to you. Some may even say that you have a greater than usual need to be liked and loved this month.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov. 22-Dec. 21 – Venus trines Neptune in your solar eleventh and third houses; you may introduce friends and siblings to each other and find they get along smashingly. Venus enters your solar twelfth house, where you may wish to share a spiritual understanding with others, or visit those in hospitals or other places of confinement. It's a good month to do volunteer work or donate to charity.

CAPRICORN - Dec. 22-Jan. 19 – Neptune goes direct Wednesday in your second house of money or possessions; be aware of where you put your credit cards, wallet or purse and don't sign any contracts right now. Venus enters your solar eleventh house of friends and clubs. You may share personal resources or simple fellowship with others. You can be a force for harmonizing any group, or just bring cookies to the next club meeting.

AQUARIUS - Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – Neptune goes direct in your sign on Wednesday, a bad day to hold press conferences or interviews because things may get hopelessly muddled. Venus enters your solar tenth house, where you get a pat on the back for your accomplishments at work or in the public sphere. Your self-worth is validated. You help support and promote social values, and help team members to get assigned to a productive slot.

PISCES - Feb. 18-March 19 – Venus in Libra is inconjunct Uranus in your sign on Monday morning; you may feel inspired by some great music during your commute so tune in to a classical station. Venus enters your solar ninth house where you share values and inspire others in a college or publishing venture. You find a philosophical insight that you can take to heart, or explain such ideas to your students. You might even get an advance/royalties from a publisher or a legal judgment in your favor.

Your Milky Way Horoscope Oct. 25-31, 2009

By Milky Way Maid

A T-square shapes up on Sunday when the Moon in Aquarius opposes Mars in Leo, and squares Sun in Scorpio. With all these planets in fixed signs, people will dig in their heels and resist compromise. Not a time for sticking to principal. Let's hope that you can just agree to disagree and leave it at that, going on to matters of the present moment like who will go to the Super Bowl or stuff like that. However, this T-square could portend something good like making a commitment to a relationship. The trine to Venus on Monday night (followed by the conjunction to Jupiter) sure suggests that a happy outcome will be worked out.

Wednesday is much more harmonious, with Moon trine Sun (2:37 pm), and Venus trine Jupiter (10 pm). Schedule meetings, interviews and introductions for this day. Venus-Jupiter can be a hazard to those with a sweet tooth because it can tempt you to overdo, to the point of getting sick. But very nice for social occasions like showers or pink-slip parties. You can pick up lots of gifts or helpful tips at such times.

Mercury enters Scorpio at 6:09 am Wednesday. Mercury here can be very awkward, because Scorpio fears revealing his emotions will make him vulnerable. As a result he becomes defensive, secretive or even vindictive. He enjoys a reputation for being mysterious. However, his strength is a keen insight into motivations; these insights can transform others' lives. Mercury here is a great psychoanalyst, counselor, detective, writer or actor.

Saturn enters Libra at 1:09 pm Thursday, the sign of its exaltation and incidentally the sign at the birth of America. (Saturn was at 14 degrees 47 minutes of Libra on July 4, 1776.) Saturn in Libra brings lessons in harmony, diplomacy, cooperation and marriage. Keep in mind one's ideals in the area of personal relationships because this pulls the energies upward toward that higher ground.

PS: I have been experimenting with using planetary hours during my week. So far I have not won any money. But I do notice that I get more of this column written during Mercury hours! Unfortunately I cannot always choose what gets done when (sigh) so I have to slog thru it as best as I can.

ARIES - March 20-April 19 – The Moon is in Aries from 2pm Friday till next Sunday night. While you won't be directly involved in the T-square on Sunday night, you may have to pull a friend out of a brewing argument. Change the subject or suggest a change of scene. On Friday another T-square forms with Moon in Aries, Saturn in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn. You may feel blocked and frustrated. A trine to Mars later that night gives you an outlet in sports or playing with the kids. A sextile to Jupiter in your solar eleventh house Saturday can bring good times or good advice from friends.

TAURUS - April 20-May 20 – You're on the receiving end of that Sunday T-square, Taurus, and might feel like taking cover. Family and career pressures can build up, and arguments can easily break out. It may feel like everyone is blaming you, but they are just venting their own frustrations. You just demand respect for the rock of Gibraltar that you are. And frankly, a little chocolate can be counted on to sweeten everyone's mood.

GEMINI - May 21-June 20 – Your Sun plays into a Venus-Jupiter trine in the other air signs on Wednesday night. A child may be accepted into a college of their choice. An in-law may be a wonderful choice to give one of your children lessons, or mentorship. The Moon-Sun trine in your tenth and sixth houses could mean a part-time job or hobby may open up into a full-time position. Ask around at work or check the bulletin board. By the time the Moon is conjunct Uranus on Thurs.-Fri. you may hear back about that.

CANCER - June 21-July 22 – Your sun sign fills out the trine between the Moon and Sun in the other water signs on Wednesday afternoon. Your intuition may work overtime but is rarely wrong. A child may gain acceptance at the college of their choice, become a published writer, or pass the bar exam. Just something that you are all too glad to celebrate and trumpet to everyone on your email list. Saturn enters your solar fourth house Libra. Your taste may become more conservative, and you also may begin to accumulate possessions (again?).

LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 – The Venus-Jupiter trine on Wednesday night is very congenial to you. You may introduce two people who really ought to meet, or a sibling may introduce you to a future spouse. Saturn enters your solar third house, prompting you to make your mind more orderly. You may embark on a course of study, or get into lifetime learning. You may start keeping notes or a notebook even though you may not have an idea of what you will make of it (such as a book).

VIRGO - Aug. 23-Sept. 22 – Mercury enters your solar third house and you may suddenly be less verbal. You may get better at analyzing others once you sit back and observe, tho. Saturn enters your solar second house and you may have to work harder for your money. Yes, I know that lots of us have had to work harder for less in recent years, and you are probably no exception, but this placement calls for even greater thrift. The upside is that you may enjoy sharing or borrowing items that you thought you needed to buy.

LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 22 – Saturn enters your solar first house which tends to help if you wish to lose weight. You may become more serious and reserved, or more focused on what you need to do. You may also need to be more aware of proper nutrition, as your health can suffer if you ignore this. Make sure to get some sun and fight stress. An upside is that you may decide to make a relationship legal or at least formalize it with a contract. Your best day this week is likely to be Wednesday when Venus in Libra trines Jupiter; spend time with your children or in creative pursuits.

SCORPIO - Oct. 23-Nov. 21 – Saturn enters your solar twelfth house which is often dreaded as a portent of hospitalization. However, a friend used this opportunity to get a responsible job in a hospital and enjoyed it tremendously. You may feel a call to be of service in a karmic way, to the lowest of the low or to those rejected by society. Best days this week are when the Moon is in Pisces, so see that paragraph.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov. 22-Dec. 21 – You enjoy days this week when the Moon is in Aquarius (Sun.-Tues.) Best day is Tuesday if you can get together with boon companions. Mercury entering your twelfth house gives you a chance to benefit by self-reflection or self-analysis. Find a trusted person to use as a sounding board. Saturn moves into your solar eleventh house and you may suddenly gain friends among the geriatric set. You may join groups with a serious or scientific orientation.

CAPRICORN - Dec. 22-Jan. 19 – Stalled proposals may not get a response till Moon enters Aries on Friday, and even then, you are as likely to get a Nyet as a Yes. Mercury moves into your solar eleventh house of friends where you may find that your volunteered attempts at Psych 101 are not quite welcome! Saturn moves into your solar tenth house where your good business sense and perseverance are rewarded. Make a point of retaining your humility even if you attain positions of power and influence.

AQUARIUS - Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – The Moon is in Aquarius from Sunday at 3:08 pm till early Wednesday. Your feelings (Moon) are part of the T-square that forms Sunday night between Mars-Sun-Moon. The trigger may be something related to family or marriage; it may even involve something good like making a commitment to a relationship. The trine to Venus on Monday night (followed by the conjunction to Jupiter) sure suggests that a happy outcome will be worked out.

PISCES - Feb. 18-March 19 – The Moon is in Pisces from 3:45 am Wednesday till midday Friday. The Moon trines the Sun in Scorpio Wednesday afternoon; you will be in a good mood and may be able to finagle needed favors. The Moon is conjunct Uranus late Thursday or early Friday; you might be way too impulsive yet be acutely psychic or intuitive about others' thoughts. Saturn and Venus in your sector of the partner's money will force you to be more disciplined about using joint accounts.

How to Putz with Type Size Online

by Milky Way Maid

We all have clicked on some article somewhere online and when it comes up, the type is SOOO small, that it is all but impossible to read! Some sites, especially news sites, have buttons at the top right of the article for enlarging the type.
But for anything else, you are out of luck.

And sometimes I am not sure if my column here on Blogspot is really legible or not. If I am in a different browser, that can affect things too -- because one browser seems to default to the tiniest type known to man.

So anyway, it occurred to me that maybe some of you out there need a tip on how to enlarge the type to a readable size.

This can be done quite easily if you have the Firefox browser. Just look on the toolbar at the top and click on View. Then a list drops down, where you can select Zoom. I like to click on Zoom Text Only; that preference will stay in effect until I click it again, no matter whether I sign out. Then click on Zoom In. I have to do this maybe two or more times to get the type significantly larger. It all depends on how small it was to begin with. If it gets TOO big, just click on Zoom Out till it is comfortable for you.

I hope this helps some of you! Have a celestial week. Trines (to coin a phrase).

Your Milky Way Horoscope Oct. 18-24, 2009

By Milky Way Maid

We have a New Moon at 25 degrees Libra on Sunday at 1:33 am. The Moon promptly goes void-of-course, however this is a usable opportunity period a half hour before and after the exact opposition. Libra New Moons put the emphasis on learning to be fair in all areas of your life. You may have an opportunity to draw out information from others to help you make informed, intelligent decisions. Libra (ideally) gives as much as it takes. Too much giving OR too much taking in a relationship is unbalanced and draining. With kindness and understanding you can act to correct that imbalance and restore your emotional equilibrium.

Mercury in Libra trines Jupiter in Aquarius on Tuesday afternoon at 5:49 ET. This favors the study of law, religion, philosophy and other heavy-duty material. It favors any business transaction, including real estate. It favors seeing a counselor or mentor for sound advice.

The Sun enters Scorpio early Friday. Happy birthday to all the deep, mysterious, fascinating Scorpios! The Sun's first aspect is a sextile to co-ruler Pluto, which seems pretty auspicious for your personal year. Your efforts at everything from research to self-transformation to empowerment should all see encouraging results. And you might even latch onto a new mystery writer you love, too.

Mercury is inconjunct Uranus and trine Neptune on Saturday. The inconjunct to Uranus is sometimes a symptom of the inability to concentrate; people jump from one idea to another or one task to another without finishing. Utilizing Neptune by learning to meditate can help you focus for longer stretches. Neptune is also music, and sometimes the right music can soothe your nerves enough that you can work with better focus.

ARIES - March 20-April 19 – Tuesday's trine between Mercury and Jupiter are ideally placed for you to benefit. You may get a valuable introduction by a partner, friend or club member, or a friend may accompany you on a business transaction. A New Moon in your solar seventh house of partners puts the accent on consideration for others' needs and feelings. You become more aware of your effect on others, as well. Face it, these things do not come natural to you, tho we love you for your directness and honesty. Best days this week have the Moon in Sag, Tues.-Fri. but especially Wed.

TAURUS - April 20-May 20 – The New Moon and the Mercury trine to Jupiter both activate your sixth and tenth houses. It is possible that a hobby (sixth house) grows into a source of income. It is also possible that your own health issues spur you to master the subject enough to make it a career. Best days for you this week have the Moon in earthy Capricorn, over the long weekend. You may enjoy a short trip or just catching up on calls and mail.

GEMINI - May 21-June 20 – Tuesday's trine between Mercury and Jupiter affect your fifth and ninth houses; your creative writing project may find a publisher, or you may enroll in a college course in the arts. The New Moon is in your solar fifth house of fun and flirting, too -- (things you do best). Work on tuning into your own ability to create and express yourself. Take an art class or babysit toddlers, who will teach you how to accept yourself. Best days for you this week have the Moon in Sag, especially on Wednesday.

CANCER - June 21-July 22 – The New Moon in Libra may be a bit stressful due to the square to your own sign. Having it in your solar fourth house often brings up self-esteem issues, so you won't be able to get away with hiding at home under this moon. You will deal with learning to accept as well as give nurturing; baby yourself, baby. The fact of the trine from Mercury in Libra to Jupiter, on Tuesday, will help you to analyze things and get a better perspective. Confucius say he who flies long, appreciates nest even more upon his return. Or something like that.

LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 - The New Moon in Libra activates local issues, transit, and relations with siblings. You may get a second chance to patch things up with an estranged sibling, provided that they treat you more fairly. Tuesday's trine between Mercury and Jupiter affect your third and seventh houses. A neighbor or sibling may help introduce you to a future spouse, or to a buyer for something you have listed to sell.

VIRGO - Aug. 23-Sept. 22 - Tuesday's trine between Mercury and Jupiter affect your second and sixth houses. You may find a way to bring in a second income stream by performing a service for others. Virgo is the sign of the teacher, and you may enjoy tutoring or counseling people on how to draw up a business plan or keep the books. The New Moon in your second house really forces you to examine your values. If your inner foundation is missing a brick, so to speak, you will be forced to deal with the lack to restore your balance.

LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 22 – The New Moon this month is in your own sign. It's a new beginning for your lunar year as you toss out what isn't working and tinker with things that need to be improved. You will get a real boost from Tuesday's trine from Mercury in Libra to Jupiter in Aquarius; Libra often has a beautifully trained voice that can do accents or project without strain. You may find a local theater group or class to provide an outlet for your fine artistic sense.

SCORPIO - Oct. 23-Nov. 21 – The Moon is in Scorpio from 10:23 am Sunday morn till Tuesday afternoon. The Moon squares Mars at midday and you may shoot off on errands or a project before getting your details straight; measure twice! The Moon is conjunct Ceres about 3 pm; you may begin cooking an elaborate dinner for loved ones or host a gathering at your home. On Monday, squares to Jupiter may pique an interest in ethics and principles. A trine to Uranus on Tuesday morn pokes your funny bone, possibly from something on the car radio. A sextile to Saturn that afternoon parks your nose firmly to the grindstone.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov. 22-Dec. 21 – The Moon is in Sag from 4:49 pm Tuesday till Friday afternoon. The Moon trines Mars in Leo on Tuesday night; you may enjoy a college basketball game. Wednesday's sextiles to Venus and Jupiter fill your luck bucket (it's so unfair!). Thursday may be quite difficult as the Moon makes a T-square to Uranus and Saturn; you may tackle a difficult task or accept a challenging promotion. The New Moon affects your solar eleventh house of friends and groups; you will try to rebalance your life if either demands too much of your energies without any return.

CAPRICORN - Dec. 22-Jan. 19 – The Moon is in Capricorn from 2:40 pm Friday till next Sunday afternoon. Your powers of analysis will be very keen early Friday with the Moon conjunct Pluto. Drill down into the company books for revealing data. A square to Venus early Saturday puts you in a very loving and affectionate mood; enjoy some very quality time with your loved ones watching the sunrise or setting out on a day trip.

AQUARIUS - Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – The New Moon is in your solar ninth house, which covers a lot of territory. Follow up on publishing or legal issues. Tuesday has a trine in air signs; this is terrific for reaching out into new territory and expanding your horizons. Call up contacts who can introduce you to new people. Record messages or start a blog site to keep in touch with customers. Your best day this week is probably Wednesday; perhaps you enroll in a course with friends, or a friend gives you lessons.

PISCES - Feb. 18-March 19 - Tuesday's trine between Mercury and Jupiter affect your eighth and twelfth houses. It will help you to get good advice in drawing up wills or getting help with an insurance problem. You may discover a great hiding place in your home for those important papers, too. Best days this week have the Moon in Scorpio, Sun.-Tues. You may hole up on Sunday with the latest mystery novel. Monday could be stressful but but you may get good advice from a professional.

Essenes were astrologers, too, as Dead Sea Scrolls show; Was Jesus an astrologer?

by Milky Way Maid

We astrologers seem to have taken for granted that the Bible is anti-astrology. A quote from the Bible has been widely interpreted as a condemnation of astrologers and astrology (although there are other interpretations). But it may surprise you to learn that the earliest Jewish writings – namely, the Dead Sea scrolls discovered at Qumran -- included astrology lessons.

The Essene scrolls, the Torah (Old Testament) and Talmud, all have references to astrological or astronomical material. They include not only interpretations of the stars and planets, but the fact that they observed other phenomena such as new and full moons, eclipses and comets.

Sid Jefferies, on his web site FactsBehindFaith.com, states that “the magi who attend the Birth of Jesus and prophesy so accurately his future are not really three ‘kings.’ These Persian magi are now properly translated as astrologers in many Bibles.”
The Qumran texts even include a bit of national forecasting. We find the line: “when the new moon is in Taurus’ foot -- happiness will come to Israel(2).”

No less a figure than Edgar Cayce also confirmed that the Essenes studied astrology and related arts: “in Carmel - the original place where the School of the Prophets was established during Elijah's time and that of Samuel - these were called the Essenes; and those that were students of what ye would call astrology, numerology, phrenology, and those phases of study of the return of individuals - or reincarnation.(4).” Cayce also states that Anna was a key figure in the Qumran community by virtue of her skills in astrology and numerology.

Collins' book on the Dead Sea scrolls states that the Essenes had a “special interest in the regular, “lawful” movements of the stars in astrology, in an exact sun calendar with fixed dates for the Sabbath and the festivals and individual horoscopes; and in physiognomy and predictions based upon the stars and physical human attributes -- a typical phenomenon of the rationalism of the Hellenistic age. Physiognomy together with the astrological nativity played an important role for the ranking of members within the community. Since the third century BCE, astrology and related sciences conquered the whole eastern Mediterranean area, with Alexandria as its center, and became the most modern “progressive” and highly esteemed science(5).”

Where did the Jewish peoples get their first instruction in astrology? Tradition says that it was revealed to Enoch on heavenly tablets(5).

We may also quote Revelation (22.16) where Christ is actually called ‘the bright and morning star,’ a clear planetary reference although such a description may be comparing him to Venus or Saturn, as it may apply to both. There are even some who believe that Jesus was a practicing astrologer! In the “Gospel of the Holy Twelve” the training of Jesus is described; “And Jesus, after he had finished his study of the law, went down again into Egypt that he might learn the wisdom of the Egyptians, even as Moses did. And for seven years he conversed with God face to face, ... and he learned the motions of the Sun and the Moon and the Stars, and the powers of letters, and the mysteries of the Square and the Circle and the Transmutation of things, and of forms, and of numbers, and of signs.”

Apparently God is an astrologer, too. Not once but twice in the Bible do we find phrases describing him counting the stars or measuring them. God is depicted as counting the stars and giving them names in Psalms 147:4 and in Isaiah 40:26. Psalms 147:4 - “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.”(7) Isaiah 40:26 - “Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”(7) Job 38:33 asks “Do you know the laws of the heavens?”(7)

Also in Revelation is an equally intriguing description of Mary. How many of us have stopped to notice the astrological or astronomical language in the following? -- ‘There appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the Sun and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. And she was pregnant …. and brought forth a man child who was to rule the nations with a rod of iron.’ (Rev. 12.1) A crown of twelve stars certainly indicates the twelve sun signs; the crown or halo is often a Neptunian image. (especially the crown of thorns, the piteous image of the suffering of Jesus).

In the Bible itself, we still find nuggets of astrology or what might be termed pre-astrology. Yoel 2:10 says that along with a belief in earthquakes and thunder as omens, they also observed solar and lunar eclipses. All these phenomenon were believed to be expressions of God's will. Which leads me to wonder, when we cast an electional or horary chart, are we asking what God's will is in the question under consideration? Do we still have some residual faith that what will be, will be, and is part of a grand design?

And let's not forget that in Genesis, after the Creator made all the stars and planets, it adds the phrase, “and let them be for signs.”(7) For signs? You mean, like in astrology? You mean, really, you're giving us permission to interpret the placement of the planets and stars??? Oh, THANK YOU!!!

Even the planetary rulers of the signs were pretty much the same as they are now although again, Jefferies gives his own views on why Mars ought to be the ruler of Scorpio, and not Pluto. Please see his article -- http://www.factsbehindfaith.com/default.aspx?intContentID=56 -- for a full discussion of the matter.

The Jewish traditions even mention a prominent astronomer and astrologer as well (and maybe even a physician) by the name of Shemuel. He lived in 3rd century CE Babylonia. While this is centuries after the Essenes or the birth of Christianity, the fact that his writings and sayings survive attest to the state of the art of the times. Shemuel said that Kima is a cold star compounded of some 100 stars (b. Berakhot 58b). Later Kima was identified with the Pleiades. Shemuel said that Kesil is a hot star without which the world would not survive (2).

An astronomer from the fifth or sixth century gave scholarly sources for a wealth of data. According to Astronomy in Ancient Judaism, “Baraita deMazalot is a unique astronomical and astrological tractate. It gives astronomical data in unprecedently scientific ways. The author describes two different systems, an Egyptian and a Babylonian one, regarding the position of the stars in the zodiacal signs at the moment of creation. The author gives the exact distances from the Earth to the Moon, from the Moon to Mercury and so forth in a manner resembling the Mesopotamian beru ina same, x heavenly units equal to y earthly units. The author quotes not only Rabbinic sources but states the opinions of “the sages of the Gentiles”, “the sages of Egypt, Chaldeans and the Babylonians”. There is no doubt that the writer drew some of his data from Ptolemy (2).” So it is clear that they knew and preserved a body of knowledge dating back to the Babylonians and Egyptians.

There is also a great deal of attention given to determining things like the moment of the New Moons, calculating the correct length of a solar and lunar year, inserting intercalary days to even out the year and keep it in sync with the solar year, and noting eclipses, equinoxes and solstices. They also give names to each of the decans of the 12 signs. In Chapter 18 of the apochryphal Testament of Solomon, the demons of the 36 decans appear with names that sometimes seem to be conscious distortions of the traditional names for the decans; each one is assigned 'rulership' over various ailments and pains. The testament lists magical cures; example: the thirty-third demon is Rhyx Phtheneoth who causes sore throat and tonsilitis and can be driven off by writing the word Leikourgos on ivy leaves and heaping them into a pile.

An ancient Jewish astrologer named Tanna gives the following rules for interpretations, which it is believed were borrowed from the Babylonians. He said: “When the sun is afflicted (solar-eclipse) – it is a bad omen for the Pagans, when the moon is afflicted - it is a bad omen for Israel, since Israel calculates according to the moon and the Pagans according to the sun. If the affliction is in the east – it is a bad omen for those who dwell in the east; in the west - it is a bad omen for those who dwell in the west; in the middle of the sky - it is a bad omen for the whole world. If the face (of the moon) looks like blood – war is coming to the world; if it looks like a sack – arrows of famine are coming to the world; if it looks like both – war and arrows of famine are coming to the world. If it was afflicted while rising – tribulation sojourns; while setting – (tribulation) comes fast. Some say the other way around” (t. Sukkah 2:6)(2).”

I might add by way of explanation that solar eclipses were believed to be punishments for any one of four ethical lapses. The eclipses were punishments rather than material for an interpretation or elective advice.

In Jubilees 12:16-17 Abraham is depicted as an astrologer who observed the stars on 1/7 (later known as Rosh Hashana), to know how rainy the coming year would be. This connection between stars and rain is part of the Mesopotamian omen heritage. (Jubilees is a Jewish apocrypha.) The verses 16-17 say: “And in the sixth week, in the fifth year thereof, Abram sat up throughout the night on the new moon of the seventh month to observe the stars from the evening to the morning, in order to see what would be the character of the year with regard to the rains, and he was alone as he sat and observed. And a word came into his heart and he said: All the signs of the stars, and the signs of the moon and of the sun are all in the hand of the Lord. Why do I search (them) out?”

Omens were read, or fortunes told, for individuals depending on what day of the week they were born or what hour was rising. “One who is born on a Monday will be a tartar, on a Tuesday – will be a wealthy man…under Venus – will be a wealthy man and adulterer, under Mercury – clever and smart” (2). Not for nothing did Jewish people wish each other 'Mazel tov' which translates literally as “good zodiacal sign” on family occasions; it is assumed to be invented in the 11th century at the latest (2).

Sid Jefferies quite rightly points out that the Kabbalah tradition incorporates a great deal of astrological knowledge. Kabbalah constantly refers to the eleven Sephiroth or Shining Ones which precisely describe the qualities of the ten planets (plus Earth, which does not shine). As Jefferies writes on his web site: “The Tree of Life is the central figure of the Kabbalah, the esoteric Tradition behind the Bible. It is entirely astrological, based on the ten planets and twelve Signs of the horoscope. It is mentioned in both Genesis and Revelation where it is clearly associated with the Sun’s annual cycle through the twelve zodiac Signs ‘the tree of life yields twelve crops of fruit, one for each month of the year. The leaves of the tree shall serve for the healing of the nations.’ Rev. 22. 2 This evidence shows the planets were all known in ancient times and even more shockingly, that astrology lies at the very heart of the biblical Tradition, from the Beginning to the End.”

Along the way, Jefferies provides an explanation for a puzzling aphorism made by Jesus. He said that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. What does it mean, besides the obvious tendency for the wealthy to lose their moral compass? From Torah: The Hebrew letter for the Moon’s long path is Gimel, a camel, the ship of the desert, full of water, while Pluto’s is a tooth or a needle. The strange image that ‘it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go to heaven’ is pure Kabbalah. The path of the camel does go up to the heavenly heights of the Crown through Pluto, through the eye of a needle.

So let's look at the Tree of Life a bit closer. See the illustration. It has all the planets we use now: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and even tiny Pluto which was not rediscovered in the modern era until 1930. How is this possible? I don't know, I only know that they are there. Traditions also assign various personages from the Bible as archetypes of certain planet, or as the Kabbalah calls them, Sephiroth or Shining Ones.

Planets and O.T. Figures attributed to them:
Neptune = Abel
Saturn = Eve and Cain
Mars = Isaac
Mercury = Aaron
EARTH = Esau and David
Moon = Joseph, and Bathsheba
Sun = ISRAEL, Solomon, Jacob, God
Pluto = Serpent
Venus = Moses
Jupiter = Abraham, Jehovah, Our Father
Uranus = Adam, Holy Spirit, Sophia

So Mazel tov, Mazel tov to you all!

[The early Jews seem to have captured an observation of Halley's Comet with this line from their books: “The Rabbis said that there is a star that rises once in 70 years and deceives sailors (b. Horayot 10a). It is assumed they meant the comet later named after Halley, a comet that appeared around 140 CE (and 70 is taken as a round number for a cycle of around 78 years) The book of Shemuel quotes him (Shemuel) saying: “the paths of the sky are known to me like the paths of Nehardea, except for a comet whose nature I do not know” (b. Berakhot 58b).]

Your Milky Way Horoscope Oct. 11-17, 2009

By Milky Way Maid

A New Moon occurs at 24 degrees, 59 minutes of Libra on Sunday, Oct. 18 (17 in the Western states) with a trine to the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius. The Moon goes void-of-course, tho at the Sun-Moon conjunction till the Moon enters Scorpio min-morning Sunday. But if there is something that you can accomplish quickly, or need to get accomplished quickly, then a cardinal New Moon is a good time to do that.

We have an opportunity period while the Moon translates darkness -- from the time it sextiles Saturn to the time it enters Leo in the wee hours Monday. That covers 9:37 pm Sunday the 11th till 12:36 am Monday (all Eastern time). Not sure what kind of personal business you can transact in person during such times, but at least the online portals never close.

Jupiter goes direct at 12:34 am Tuesday. Rah! See what houses in your natal chart have Jupiter-ruled Sag and Pisces on the cusp. You may finally see some movement in issues related to those houses, if you have been stymied through the summer. Jupiter went retrograde in mid-June.

Two planets change signs this week. Venus enters its home, Libra, at 6:46 pm on Wednesday. Mars enters Leo at 11:32 am on Friday. Venus in Libra is so loving and so caring in regards to others' feelings. However, the bad part is that Venus here may withhold its real feelings and then feels confused, helpless, worthless -- with a cup of self-doubt -- in relationships. You need to learn the fun of swapping favors to get what YOU want out of a meeting or friendship. Assert your integrity, insist on fair play, and raise everyone else up to a higher level of play.

Now fortunately you Librans will see this Venus in a sextile aspect to assertive Mars, now entering brave Leo. Mars in Leo can be very courageous in asserting leadership, so draw on that Leonine courage. Leos can be very expansive anyway, and with Venus in Libra greasing the wheels a bit, and adding her irresistible charms, this Mars-Venus duo can dramatize, inspire others, and create positive partnerships. A Cardinal-energy Venus and a take-charge Leo Mars are pretty well unstoppable. Just remember not to run people over with your steamroller engine.

ARIES - March 20-April 19 – Best days are Mon.-Tues. with Moon in fire sign Leo. A Monday morning Mercury in your seventh house makes time for communication with your loved ones before going off to work. Tuesday night is made for a night out with friends at the movies, with that Moon-Neptune aspect. Your significant other never looked lovelier, now that Venus has entered your solar seventh house as of Wednesday evening. Mars enters your solar fifth house Leo on Friday, energizing anew your love of sports and competition. Your buddies better watch out, because you were just playing before, now you're in it for the win.

TAURUS - April 20-May 20 – Mars entering your solar fourth house Leo can make you prefer a warmer color scheme for fall, as well as evenings by the fireplace. Mars here also increases your concern about security, and can raise the volume and frequency of arguments. Make a special effort to create a soothing atmosphere, with soft pillows. Feng Shui tip: place a mirror above the fireplace to keep fire energy from racing out of control. Venus entering your solar sixth house can bring an agreeable second job or supplemental income, possibly in a service position. Take care to avoid overdoing the sweets.

GEMINI - May 21-June 20 – Give yourself plenty of time for commuting on Tuesday because traffic might be a bit heavy. On Wednesday, Venus enters your solar fifth house of fun and no one has more fun flirting and romancing. Gemini is the natural flirt anyway. Creative self-expression also is favored while Venus is there, so until Nov. 8, practice your flute, daub that self-portrait, and sing your solo. You are also certain to notice if there's a new boy next door, now that Mars enters your solar third house. Uh-hmm, I see you offering to help show him around the local establishments. And probably dropping a hankie (by accident, of course).

CANCER - June 21-July 22 – The Moon is in its home sign Cancer on Sunday till midnight. Cancer may get in a tug-of-war with Libra early Sunday as it the lights square each other. Maybe you should just do your thing and get back together for lunch or dinner. In the afternoon, the Moon trines Uranus; you may enjoy the company of a foreigner, so host an exchange student or try to meet visitors to your hometown. A sextile to Venus at dinnertime favors a lovely time with family, didn't I tell you? Venus enters your solar fourth house of home and family on Wednesday, auguring well for parties or redecorating.

LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 – The Moon is in Leo from midnight Sunday till 3:45 am Wednesday. Moon in Leo sextiles Mercury in Libra Monday morning; pay a compliment, turn on the charm and make someone feel good about it being a MONDAY. Avoid frantic haste on Tuesday morning; get up when the alarm goes off instead of hitting snooze. And it's too easy for you to veg out at the end of the same day; this isn't like you. Try soothing your jangled nerves with a good soak in the tub. A bit of aromatherapy can get you through the week, too.

VIRGO - Aug. 23-Sept. 22 – The Moon is in Virgo from very early Wednesday till Friday morning. Wednesday you may pick up a fascinating book (a mystery, or maybe some real-life detective story). Thursday favors a trip to your practitioner for an adjustment, whether to your spine or regimen. The Moon also opposes Uranus which can bring a new insight into why you are having certain problems. Early Friday aspects to Saturn and Mars will help you work through any pile of chores or clear your desk. Hang tight, Saturn will leave your sign at the end of the month. (Although it sometimes seems like you've enjoyed suffering through his sojourn in Virgo.)

LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 22 – Venus enters Libra on Wednesday. You may seize the opportunity to spruce up at the salon with a new 'do for fall, and update your wardrobe. But this Venus can cause you to be too conciliatory to your own detriment; see notes at top. The Moon is in Libra 6:29 am Friday till Sunday. The Moon is conjunct Venus about 10 am Friday; ask a favor of a woman friend. The Sun in Libra trines Neptune Friday evening which can lead you to deceive yourself but is fine for a night at the movies. Saturday's trines to Jupiter-Neptune in your solar fifth house energize your creative muse in any medium you choose.

SCORPIO - Oct. 23-Nov. 21 – Mars enters your solar tenth house of career; success may come with your own business altho you must watch what you say about others behind their backs. Mars here gives you the energy to introduce yourself to possible customers and suppliers. The New Moon this weekend is in your solar twelfth house of hospitals and other places of confinement. Let us hope that you are only visiting friends or volunteering. You may also wish to beautify a retreat corner of your home, to listen to music or just enjoy a private view.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov. 22-Dec. 21 – Your ruling planet Jupiter goes direct on Tuesday and may ease frustrations that have vexed you this summer. A strong desire to travel may seize you when Mars enters your solar ninth house Leo on Friday. Venus enters your solar eleventh house of friends and clubs, so it is possible that an opportunity to travel with a group may present itself. Who knows, maybe you could even lead or chaperon the tour. If something does not present itself this week, then perhaps the New Moon over the weekend will activate it.

CAPRICORN - Dec. 22-Jan. 19 – Venus moving into Libra, and a New Moon in Libra both put an accent on your solar tenth house of career. You may gain some women customers or mentors, or be in a Venus-ruled business like music, cattle, commodities like copper or sugar, interior decorating. Mars moves into your solar eighth house of insurance-wills-taxes, increasing the odds that you will have to dispute a decision by an insurer, contest a will, or incur taxes.

AQUARIUS - Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – Venus moves into your solar ninth house of law, college, publishing and religion. You will possibly benefit from women in any of those areas, or receive an advance on a book project. Mars moves into your solar seventh house of partners, a most problematic placement. If you are a woman, a dynamic man may enter your life. If you are a man, arguments and disputes threaten to steal your marital happiness. Mars can be sublimated in regular exercise, attending sporting events you both enjoy, and cooking over a flame. Let go of what is not worth arguing about.

PISCES - Feb. 18-March 19 – Venus enters your solar eighth house of wills-insurance-taxes. You may finally get a payment for a doctor claim, fees owed to you for services, or a little something from a late aunt. Beauty helps you recharge your batteries; this might mean visiting the local theatre district to see the lighted marquees. Mars enters your solar sixth house of health, boosting your energies. You'll be industrious at work and prone to impatience with co-workers. Mars here also raises the chance of fevers so keep taking your vitamins and protecting your immune system.
